Affordable Neighborhoods in Nj Easy Commute to Nyc

Red pin in Pennsylvania with view of New York

Millions of people are commuting into New York City to work every day and finding an affordable place to live when commuting can be difficult. There are lots of great New Jersey towns that you can live in, but some people prefer to escape the high prices and taxes that come with being a New Jersey resident and choose to live in Pennsylvania.

The best places to live in Pennsylvania when commuting to New York City are:

  • Stroudsburg
  • East Stroudsburg
  • Delaware Water Gap
  • Easton
  • Portland

The Poconos (1 hour 32 minutes)

Living in the Poconos is a great solution when you are looking to live in Pennsylvania but still make it into the city on a daily basis. Three Pocono towns that allow easy access to New York City are Stroudsburg, East Stroudsburg, and Delaware Water Gap. The Pocono Mountains offer amazing hiking trails, skiing, and boating. They also have great breweries, drive-in movie theaters, restaurants, casinos, and plenty of other things to do! Below are the towns that are best to live in when commuting to NYC.

Stroudsburg (1 hour 34 minutes)

Stroudsburg is a great place to live if you are looking to relocate to Pennsylvania. With a commute of just over an hour to an hour and a half, it is a great choice for homebuyers. Living here offers extremely easy access to Route 80, you will be in New Jersey in minutes and will have a pretty straight shot into the city.

The average home is valued at just bove $155,000, which is great for most young families or couples that are looking to purchase a home. Rent is going to be around $1,000 depending on what your needs are.

Stroudsburg has tons of things to do, including Banter's Hard Cider, a favorite of mine. They offer a great variety of ciders and share a building with a great winery that has a small back patio and live music.

East Stroudsburg (1 hour 35 minutes)

East Stroudsburg is quickly growing into a favorite for commuters that are looking to get out of New Jersey and New York. The commute times are very similar to Stroudsburg, which is 60-90 minutes away from New York City, sometimes 2 hours if traffic is heavy.

While there are some luxurious options in East Stroudsburg, the average home price is much lower than most areas of New Jersey and New York. The median price of homes is around $140,000, which will get you a 1,600 square foot home.  The crime rate is higher than most of the other areas of Pennsylvania, so this is something that you should pay attention to before making any decisions.

East Stroudsburg offers multiple attractions that will help you get out and about when you are not in the city working. Resica Falls is a great park that allows the public to explore the waterfalls and hiking paths in the Pocono Mountains. It also includes multiple museums and Silverback Distillery, which offers premium spirits and small batch bottles that can be purchased after visiting their tasting room.

The homes in this area are a bit more expensive, averaging just over $195,000 and they are projected to increase at an above average rate.
